Online Dating Led to a Blended Family

My family consists of myself, my wife, our 3 son's and our dog Brandy. We both came into our relationship with a child, then after being married a few years we had a child together...Hers (Deonte - 23), Mine (Brian - 20), and Ours (Branden - 9). Every time one of us tells that story to someone a little older than us that's what they always say. I met my wife almost 16 years ago on AOL messenger. I was looking for some other girl I had been chatting with and clicked on my wife's name by mistake. We chatted and found out we knew a ton of the same people because while I was at CMU, she was at Northwood in Midland. Our paths had definitely crossed because when we finally met in person we both knew we had seen one another before. After dating for some years, I knew she was the one so I bought the ring. Now this was not traditional proposal because I was a shy guy. I kinda just gave it to her, no words were said...only tears of joy (from her of course). We were married in June 2005.

Our family is not unique in this day and age, but back then it was pretty new to be dating online then eventually marrying that person. I think about social media today and how different it is. I don't know if we would have met the same way if Instagram was in the picture or Snapchat. There are so  many people using these avenues and unlike AOL, you can't look in a quick search for people in your area.

  1. That's pretty unique how you met your wife. It's great that it led to what it is today. Great family, I hope for the best!

  3. This is a great story! Thinking about AOL messenger sounds so vintage, haha. It's crazy because nowadays there's tons of dating websites, and even apps you can download on your phone. My current boyfriend and I actually met on a dating app called Tinder (it has a bad rep, I know). After getting each others numbers, we actually talked on snapchat more often than text or phone, and then eventually we talked on the phone, texted, still snap chatted here and there, and then finally met in person. So maybe my boyfriend and I are the modern day version of you and your wife! :-)
